Research topics

(1) Elucidation of molecular mechanisms of cellular responses to external stresses such as radiation

Organisms have survived throughout their long evolutionary history by responding appropriately to various external stresses, including radiation. It is no exaggeration to say that the development of mechanisms to respond to these stresses has shaped the characteristics of each species. Our laboratory aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of cellular-level responses (especially gene expression) to various stresses, including radiation. In particular, we focus on a group of functional RNAs called long non-coding RNAs.

Furthermore, cancer cells are known to gain distinct stress responses. Therefore, we are also engaged in basic research to understand and control cancer through elucidating changes in gene expression characteristic of cancer cells.

(2) Elucidation of life phenomena using imaging

When people are ill or injured, diagnoses are routinely carried out. Radiation is very important method for sensitively detecting changes in the internal structure and function of living organisms. Furthermore, photons of various wavelengths, such as ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light, also make a tremendous contribution to the visualization of biological phenomena. It can truly be said that "seeing is believing”. In our laboratory, we also focus on imaging analysis, and are working to elucidate various biological phenomena and develop drugs through imaging analysis at the cellular and organism levels.

(3)  Fukushima Resilience study

The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred in 2011 and the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant caused extensive damage mainly in Fukushima area. Immediately after the accident, we have been engaged in various activities such as radiation screening, exposure surveys, and decontamination at Hamadori area in Fukushima Prefecture. The scars of the nuclear accident still remain deeply. As experts in the field of radiation, we continue to support the reconstruction of Fukushima.
